How Amazon royalties & author copies work
Paperback sales on Amazon
On Amazon.com, paperbacks priced at $9.99 or more earn a 60% royalty rate; those priced below $9.99 earn 50%. Amazon subtracts the printing cost from that amount.
Your royalty = (royalty rate × list price) − printing cost
For example: a $15 paperback with a $4 printing cost would earn $5 per Amazon.com sale at the 60% rate. This is an illustration, not an estimate for your book. Rates and thresholds differ by marketplace; eligible Expanded Distribution sales earn 40% less printing cost.
Estimate print cost & royalties ↗The calculator covers paperback and hardcover, not Kindle eBooks or Expanded Distribution. Use your final page count, ink, trim, format, marketplace, and proposed price. Check the final estimate in your KDP pricing screen.
Kindle eBook sales: 70% or 35%
Kindle offers two royalty options. The 70% option applies to qualifying books and sales in eligible territories. The current Amazon.com price range is $2.99–$12.99, with other eligibility rules also applying.

Delivery cost depends on file size. Sales outside eligible territories generally earn 35%. Public-domain books are ineligible for 70%, and some countries require KDP Select enrollment. Final earnings can also be affected by price matching. Your eBook pricing screen shows the estimate for each option.
Author copies & direct sales
From your KDP Bookshelf, choose your live print book, select “Order author copies,” then choose the quantity and marketplace. You pay printing cost plus shipping and applicable taxes. These copies can be resold or given away.
Author-copy orders and your direct resales do not earn a KDP royalty. Your direct-sale margin is the amount you charge minus your printing, shipping, tax, and selling costs. Copies are purchased separately from the Dust Jacket publishing package.
